Breakfast in California

Good morning everyone! One of the first things I noticed after moving to Madrid was how different breakfast was from back home in California. A typical breakfast in Madrid consists of coffee and a small pastry, or piece of toast. Some people even skip breakfast and eat lunch as their first meal. In California, however, breakfast is a large and important meal. In my opinion, it is the best meal of the day!

I love breakfast in California because it is normally delicious and healthy. My favorite breakfast is called an acai bowl, which is shown in the photo above. An acai bowl is similar to a smoothie but with a thicker consistency. Many people put fresh fruit, peanut butter, granola, and chia seeds on top.

If there is not enough time to make an acai bowl, because of school or work, many people make fresh fruit smoothies or juices instead.

My other favorite breakfast from California is called avocado toast. Avocado (in general) is very popular because California produces more avocados than any other state in America! It is also very healthy and contains vitamins and fats that are good for your hair and skin.

Other popular breakfast foods in California include: Breakfast burritos, oatmeal and fruit, veggie scramble, banana pancakes, bacon and eggs, green juice, and granola.

Breakfast burritos are especially popular in Los Angeles because we are so close to Mexico. A breakfast burrito normally contains eggs, bacon, cheese, potatoes, and vegetables.

A veggie scramble is made with scrambled eggs and any cooked veggies that you want to add. Some people prefer to use egg whites instead of a full egg, to lower the amount of cholesterol in the dish.

Banana pancakes may seem unhealthy but they can be made in a healthy way. Many of my friends for example, make what's called '3 ingredient pancakes' or pancakes made with just banana, egg, and oats. In the video below, you can find a recipe for these pancakes, along with other healthy breakfast foods.

I've also created a matching game that you can access by clicking on the link below. Try to match the photo to its correct breakfast food name! (If you can't click the link, copy and paste it to a new webpage.)
