Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone!
Every year, on March 17th, people from around the world celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. Even though Saint Patrick's Day is an Irish holiday, we celebrate it in the United States because Irish immigrants played a big role in the growth of the US. Many other countries (such as Canada, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand) also have a big Irish influence and celebrate this holiday.
Where is Ireland?
Ireland is a large Island on the Western edge of Europe. The Republic of Ireland makes up a majority of the island (in yellow). Northern Ireland makes up a smaller part of the island to the North (in green). It is part of the United Kingdom.
Who is Saint Patrick?
Saint Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. According to legend, he banished all of the snakes from Ireland. To this day, there are no snakes on the island of Ireland.
How do we celebrate Saint Patrick's Day?
In California, we celebrate by wearing green because green is the national color of Ireland. If you don't wear green, you may be pinched so be careful! We also celebrate by making all of our food green. In the photos above, you can see a green cake, green eggs, green bagels, and a green shake!
Some people also celebrate by Irish dancing. Irish step dance is a traditional dance from Ireland that was popular in the 19th century. It is very difficult because you have to keep your upper body still while moving your legs. See if you can follow along to the video below!
I've included a presentation about Saint Patrick's Day if you would like to learn more. See if you can answer the questions before the correct answer appears!
