1. Shaun White
When you think of California, what comes to mind? Many people would say the ocean, movies, and endless sun. While the beaches are beautiful, and the sun is bright, California also has plenty of mountainous terrains. For this reason, it is home to many famous snowboarders and skiers, the most famous of them being Olympic athlete, Shaun White. Shaun White has won the most Olympic gold medals of any Olympic snowboarder. He was born in San Diego, California, and is also a professional skateboarder. White was the first Olympian to compete and medal in both Summer and Winter games.
2. Florence Griffith Joyner
Florence Griffith Joyner, or Flo-Jo, is an American track and field athlete from Los Angeles, California. She is considered the fastest woman of all time! This is because, in 1988, Joyner set the world record for the 100m and 200m sprints. Even though 32 years have passed, these world records of 10.49s and 21.34s still stand today.
3. Michelle Kwan
Michelle Kwan is widely considered one of the greatest figure skaters of all time. Not only is she a two-time Olympic medalist, but also a five-time World Champion, and nine-time US Champion. As someone who falls every time I set foot on the ice, I can only imagine the time, energy, and dedication it took to master such a difficult sport. Below I've included a video of Kwan's 1998 Winter Olympics Performance to "On My Own."
4. Misty May & Kerrie Walsh
Misty May and Kerrie Walsh are my favorite Olympians because they were born and raised in Los Angeles, like me! In fact, when I played beach volleyball with my friends we would often go to the same beach these Olympians used to practice. In 2004 and 2008 they became the only beach volleyball team to repeat as gold medalists in the Summer Olympics. Both years, they won every single set they participated in.
5. Aly Wagner
Aly Wagner was born and raised in San Jose, California. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FIFA Women's World Cup bronze medalist. What's more, Wagner worked as a soccer analyst for both Fox News and ESPN after her career as an American midfielder. She was the first woman on US Television to call a FIFA Men's World Cup Game.
I've included below a word search and scramble that involves Olympic Games Vocabulary. Enjoy!
