Watching TV can be one of the best ways to learn a foreign language. More than teaching you the language itself, TV shows can help you become familiar with the gestures, idioms, and social norms of an entirely different culture. Since many of us have ample free time this month, I want to recommend 5 English TV shows (for young learners) and two websites that I believe are both educational and entertaining.
1. Arthur
The first TV series I want to recommend is called Arthur. Arthur is the longest-running children's animated series in the United States. It revolves around the life of an 8-year-old aardvark (Arthur), his friends and family, and their social interactions on a day-to-day basis. Arthur was one of my favorite TV shows as a child, and it continues to be a favorite among children in the US today.
Available on: youtube, PBS kids
2. Peppa Pig
The next TV series I would recommend for young learners is Peppa Pig. This show is highly popular all over the world and for good reason. Similar to Arthur, Peppa Pig revolves around the life of a pig and her relationship to family, friends, and the world around her. It is a British animated series, however, it is still popular in America and all over the world.
Available on: Netflix, youtube
3. The Magic School Bus
A list of educational Television shows for children would not be complete without The Magic School Bus. This show is older (first produced in 1994) however it is one of the most well-liked TV shows to date. The Magic School Bus was based on a children's book series that I also recommend reading. It is about a 3rd-grade science class taught by Miss Frizzle, an eccentric but kind teacher with curly red hair. Every day, the class goes on adventures together in a magical school bus to discover new places, animals, and even time periods.
Available on: Netflix, amazon prime
4. Phineas and Ferb
Phineas and Ferb is an American animated TV series for children, however, it was one of my favorite shows as an adult too. The show takes place in the imaginary city of Danville and follows the adventures of the stepbrother, Phineas and Ferb. Every day, the brothers create an elaborate game or project to try and occupy time during their summer vacation. (They also have a pet platypus who doubles as a secret agent!)
Available on: Disney Plus
5. Modern Family
The final Television series I would like to recommend is called Modern Family. Modern family, as the title suggests, is about family life in the modern era. It follows the lives of three families who are all interconnected: a nuclear family, stepfamily, and same-sex family. The series was acclaimed by critics and gives insight to family life in my home town, Los Angeles, California. While young learners can watch this show, it may be more well-suited for children with a higher English level.
I've also included 2 websites that offer many TV Shows in English along with activities, stories, and games. Feel free to explore!
